Shade is a performance project about shared culture and food. Shade uses dress, decorated dinner tables, performance and food to create social events of arts, dinner and entertainment in specific sites. This year, having successfully gained funding, we extended our series of feasts and events to public space and private homes across Bristol. Shade Home 2010 started at St Nicholas Markets on October 4, to create a magical evening dinner event in the Glass Arcade, with a tour of other sites in the Markets. We then progressed to four homes across Bristol, North, South, East and West, working with our Hosts and guests to create a new space of shared food and culture in their neighbourhood.

Shade starts from the idea of dressing to pass, dressing for dinner, the business suit as a global passport to new networks of influence and trade. Shade events are hosted by performers wearing suits already embroidered with their allegiances and their visas. Hosts and Guests were invited through public call out via St Nicholas Markets, and through Host suggestions of people from their communities, to dine with us, to be part of a new space of shared food and culture, to contribute recipes if they wish, to be entertained, and to join a conversation about food, dress and shared cultures.

For each event, we created a parade to the Host Home/venue, and a unique dinner event, where Shade, hosts and guests shared food, culture, recipes, and created their own new take on passport photos and passing across communities and ideas.

‘it was amazing seeing it all unfold in my house…’ Jan Winter, Host for Shade Home 2009

‘it sounds like an intercultural Come Dine with Me…I’d love a zoot suit’   Maff, BCFm Radio, interview June 2 2010 1.15pm
‘We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, with such wonderful performance, stories, food, conversation and company.’  Paul H, guest at Shade Home 2009
