SHADE is my current project, involving collaboration, dress, tailoring and performance.

SHADE costume, performance, textile; how would you dress to pass, to migrate, to arrive in new cultures and communities? Shade suits carry their allegiances embroidered on their sleeves, their influences printed on their jacket linings, old tailoring traditions cut into their newly embroidered narratives as Savile Row clashes with urban diaspora dandies La Sape; becoming ceremonial robes for shared migrations, as new spaces of engagement are created through shared cultures of dress and influence.

Shadeinstallation, collaboration each suit is drawn, fitted and designed in conversation with its wearer – fitting becomes not just a matter of cloth but of culture and influence. Each Shade event becomes a collaboration across site, performer and audience, seduced by beautiful tailoring and sumptuous embroidery, sustained by inquisitive shared conversations about craft skills, familiar spaces and spectacular costume. For us craft and pattern become political, transgressive ways of tailoring our own networks of power and influence…

Shade has collaborated with writers, poets, artists, tailors, fashionistas and ecologists. Shade has hosted tea parties, led tours, and is currently planning an intimate evening in a private house, thinking about dressing for dinner and spaces of ceremony and privacy – dining as a ritual and as a shared cultural act of resistance…
our invitation is about exchange – shared culture and intimate spectacle: will you dine with us?

We are always interested in new contexts and collaborators, that our cartel can interact with, be influenced by, and perform with. Shade projects are developed specifically with our existing performers and new collaborators for each occasion, and we have a variety of possible strategies, from outdoor parade to intimate dinner performance. Project statement, and specific information about each previous and upcoming Shade event is listed on this website. Please contact Jacky Puzey if you would like to work with or learn more about the Shade project.
